Stay at The Montcalm London Marble Arch Hotel: Enjoy Visiting London Zoo and Royal Mews

One of the most famous and the oldest scientific zoos in the world, London Zoo in Regent’s Park, was opened on 27 April 1828 basically for being used as a collection for scientific study. The zoo’s collection was bolstered with the transfer of the animals of the Tower of London menageries in 1832. Opened to the public in 1847, it is now home to a collection of 698 species of animals with a total population of 20,166 individuals. Also known as Regent’s zoo, it has one of the largest collections of animals in the UK.

The zoo is situated at the northern edge of Regent’s Park with the Regent’s Canal running through it. It is on the boundary line between the City of Westminster and the borough of Camden. The larger animals such as elephants and rhinos have been moved to the more spacious ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire. The ZSL London Zoo besides being the first scientific zoo also opened the first Reptile House in 1849, the first Aquarium in 1843, the first insect house in 1881, and the first children’s zoo in 1938.

The Sumatran tigers are one of the special animals at the zoo having been provided with a new five star home on 22 March 2013, which is five times the size of their earlier home. The design of the new Tiger Territory Space was based on satisfying all the needs of the tigers so that they feel at home. Floor to ceiling glass windows have been provided in the enclosure for the tigers, so that visitors can see the tigers from close quarters. To enable visitors to know more about the tigers from their keepers, daily ‘Meet the Animals’ is held by the zoo. The important areas of the zoo include the Aquarium, Gorilla Kingdom, the Clore Rainforest Lookout, Penguin Pool and Butterfly Paradise. At the Blackburn Pavilion, you can see rare and beautiful creatures along with more than fifty species of birds.
