Gibraltar for its limited size has a lot of cultural diversity and this is reflected in the many festivals and events organised all throughout the year. The biggest celebration in town is the National Day, which is celebrated every year on September 10. This event commemorates the first referendum organised to retain British sovereignty over the country. Other events include singing competitions, chess tournaments, a boat regatta etc.

Three Kings Cavalcade: It is the first festival and is held before the Epiphany. Celebrants in colourful costumes throw sweets to onlookers in the Three Kings parade that is held along Main Street. There are bands that march along the street with live music and prizes for the most decorative floats.
**Chess Festival: **An annual event held in the period between January and February one of the most important chess tournaments are held in the city. Most of the top Grand Masters participate and it features an impressive line-up of chess players from all across the globe.

International Boat Show: While the focus is on the swanky yachts that participate in the event, other side attractions include music, fashion, automobiles and dance. The National police and showcase their latest cars and vessels with the Ocean Village Marina offering a number of water-related activities.

National Day: The most important day in the cultural calendar of Gibraltar is September 10, celebrated as the country’s National Day. It celebrates the holding of the first referendum in favour of remaining a British territory held in 1967. The citizens dress in the colours of the flag in red and white attire and participate in a street festival on the Naval Grounds. Another celebration is held at the John Mackintosh Square that hosts a food fair. Similarly, the celebrations take place in full swing at the Grand Casemates Square with children’s rides and other amusement activities. There is a brilliant firework show held over the Bay of Gibraltar with 30k balloons in red and white released into the air (the balloons represent the population of Gibraltar).
Song Festival: The best of local musical talents participate in the festival and share the stage with some of the biggest names in the music industry from across the world at this annual event. Held in September, there is a songwriting contest in which aspiring songwriters from all over the world participate. There is a hefty cash prize for the winner with proceeds going to local charities.
**Polar Bear Swim: **The event is organised in the cold waters of Catalan Bay on Boxing Day with dozens of intrepid swimmers taking the plunge into the frigid waters for the event. After the event, the swimmers warm up with pies and mulled wine.
