Explore the spooky side of Cambridge

England is home to some of the spookiest spots in the world, ranging from haunted castles to abbeys where spirits of the long departed roam. If you are one who has an interest in the paranormal and mysterious one of the best places to explore on Halloween is Cambridge.

Yes, like other ancient cities of England the city has its fair share of haunting and ghost sightings. Halloween is also that time of the year when you look for the best hotel deals in Cambridge.

A good choice in terms of price and facilities is The Tamburlaine hotel, a four star property known for its luxurious ambience and excellent facilities.

Some of the spookier spots to check out in Cambridge are:

Corpus Christi:
It has earned a name as one of the scariest colleges in town. From the college symbol of a pelican chewing on its own fluff to feed its chicks, to tales of new students having to drink from the horns of an ancient creature, there are a lot of fables and myths that surround the college. One of the most haunted spots is the Old Master’s Lodge located in Old Court, which is rumoured to have a resident ghost of former master Henry Butts. Legend has it that despite his selfless service to help the plague stricken residents, he was neglected by the fraternity. Disappointed and dejected, he strung himself up from the door of the Old College. There even was rumour of a supposed exorcism carried out in 1904, when the participants saw the apparition of a 17th century gentleman hanging from the college door. Scary enough to give anyone goose bumps!

Sidney Sussex:
The H staircase located in Chapel Court is said to be haunted by the ghost of a Sidney Sussex. This became a regular occurrence in the 1960s, when there were appearances of auras and foul aromas. Other tales include of the temperature dropping mysteriously and a awful purple eye floating in mid-air, all of which is accompanied by a most horrid smell.

Trinity:
The students at the college formed a Ghost Club in 1851. Members allegedly included Siegfried Sassoon and Charles Dickens. Myth has it that after joining one becomes a spirit in this and the afterlife, hence the rather odd form of addressing each other as ‘Brother Ghost”. The strange bit is that the club still exists to search for the supernatural.

King’s College:
King’s Colleges has its own ghost take with the Gibbs Building taking centre stage. It is rumoured to house the spirit of a morbid and gruesome academic who goes by the name of Mr. Barratt. Legend says that he screamed an entire night and was found stone cold dead in a coffin the next day.

Magdalene College:
Those who are brave enough can venture to the dog cemetery located in the Fellowes Garden. A thin male figure is said to stay permanently in the area with rumours of him having put in a cameo appearance right up to 2008.
