Castle Acre and Priory

Castle Acre is a small village in Norfolk which is predominantly known for the remains of the castle and priory which can be found here. It is one of the finest examples of a planned Norman settlement across the whole of the UK and so it is no surprise that it attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The castle is little more than a medieval ruin though it was once an impressive motte and bailey castle, founded by William de Warenne in 1070. Even in its ruined state, it is classed as a Grade I listed building and is considered one of the finest examples of this type of castle, from this period in history making it well worth a visit. It is also worth noting that the Bailey Gate, one of two stone gatehouses, is also a remarkable addition to the castle and was part of the castle’s earthwork defences. From The Harper North Norfolk hotel it would take just over half an hour to reach the village and the castle making it an easy and accessible day out.

Something which Castle Acre is perhaps best known for however is the priory which can be found here, now owned and maintained by English Heritage. It might not be your first thought of somewhere to visit if you are staying in one of the boutique hotels in Norfolk but as one of the largest and best preserved monastic sites in England, if you happen to be in the area then we would highly suggest taking the time to explore. The priory dates back to 1090 and was home to the first Cluniac order of monks in the country with lots of Cluniac decoration still present around the ruins. Visitors are encouraged to make use of the audio tour which guides you around the extensive ruins and offers information and insight into how the monastery once operated.

Other highlights at the ruins include the west end church gable which is breathtaking and one of the most substantial remains at the site. There is also a herb garden which has been recreated to represent the type of garden the monks would have used to grow herbs used in medicine, food and for decoration too.

If you have time then it is also worth heading into the village of Castle Acre. It is a beautiful and picturesque village which sits alongside Peddars Way; a Roman road and now a Norfolk trail which is very popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders alike. In the village itself you can admire the traditional Norfolk flint houses, the quaint tea shops and the pub which is flanked by the Castle on one side and the Priory on the other. It is also just a short drive from the Georgian market town of Swaffham which would also be a wonderful place to explore.

The Castle and Priory were likely built in this very spot due to the proximity of Peddars Way and the River Nar, which made it an ideal location for transportation, trade and defence.
