A guide of the little museum in Dublin

The little museum is a people’s museum in the city centre of Dublin. It’s situated in a Georgian row house owned by the Dublin city council. The museum does not have its name for nothing – it is actually little. You can actually imagine a simple house that does not look like a museum at all from the outside but from the inside, it’s gorgeous!

The museum tries to explain and represent the story of Dublin in the 20th century and inform the people about how it was like. The museum opened its doors for the first time in October 2011, which makes it a very young visitor centre. The institution is registered as a charity and governed by Failte Ireland, Dublin City Council and the National Tourism Department.
The museum has three storeys. One is reserved for the offices and the basement features Hatch & Sons Irish Kitchen. Various areas of interest are targeted but the most important ones seem to be 1916 Easter Rising, John F. Kennedy and some other parts of political and social history. Recently, pieces referring to U2 are being exhibited as well.

In 2014, the museum got a publicity boost by purchasing a collection of private letters and previously unseen sketches, paintings, and poems by the famous poet Christy Brown. Together with the National Gallery, they have been in the centre of attention until they sold it to Bonhams in London for a huge amount of money.

Next to exhibiting more than 5,000 artefacts of donators or lenders, the museum also organizes child educating tours called “I love Dublin” or a tourist greeter program called “The city of thousand welcomes” which involves an ambassador of the museum, taking the visitors out for a drink and have personal interaction with them.

Getting there is easy as the museum is located very central, just off Grafton street. You can either walk there, take the local tram, Luas, using the green line to Stephen’s Green or hop on a city centre bus. The doors are opened each day from 9:30am until 17pm. Entry comes with a guided tour.
Book your tickets now and discover for yourself why visitors love the quirky little museum so much.
